The Pomology Program extends useful, technical, and economic research-based information to fruit and nut producers in California. Farm Advisors provide local subject matter leadership and expertise in assigned areas to determine and evaluate grower and processor problems.

Major issues include improvement of production practices, resource management, pest management, food safety, worker safety, postharvest handling, alternative crops, enterprise and market analysis, and agricultural education of the public.

Bill Coates has been the Farm Advisor for tree fruit and nut crops in San Benito County since 1976. More recently he has also assumed those duties for Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties and assists in Santa Clara County as needed. He graduated from the University of California at Davis with a BS degree in Plant Science in 1972 and a MS degree in Horticulture in 1974. He also took doctoral coursework at Davis and Oregon State University. Bill, his wife Nancy and their three children - Ryan, Ashley and Darren - live in Hollister.
